photographing the red fox

I watch and photograph a red fox watching my cat in his catrun. When the fox hears my camera clicking, she stares at me a moment and then curls up on the hillside as if to nap. I hope she’s not dreaming of cats.

Suddenly, the fox sits and stares up the hill into the forest. Another fox is coming, perhaps interested in watching my cat, too, but he’s apparently not welcome to join us.

I wonder if they’re already aquainted and have a long history of greeting each other this way.

After a few seconds pushing match, the newcomer slinks away. And we, the first fox, my cat, and I, go back to watching each other while I make photographs of the fox.

After a few minutes, the fox leaves. I hope both foxes have gone searching for rodents, their natural diet.

Captured with a dslr and 100-400 telephoto zoom lens in cloud filtered afternoon sunlight. Cropped a bit to let you in on the details of each image.

It is always an honor and a thrill to even see a fox. To be able to spend quality time and photograph its life for even a few minutes must have been incredible. These are wonderful pictures.

These are great and beautiful, as usual! I think these are my favorites. They really look healthy, yes?

    Connie,
These pictures are so great! You have the patience to be a photographer for National Geographic. I think that I will enjoy being on Facebook to get notices about your new posts. The fox is wonderful

    Hey Con
Nice shots, are you worried about people plagerizing your photos, and doesn’t your dog chase the foxes?

  6. Con Daily says:

    Hi Mike. Thanks.
My dog would like to chase the foxes, but he isn’t allowed. He does growl at them from inside the house or his fenced area outside. When we go walking, he’s on a lead.
I don’t worry, but I have, in the past, found some of my images on other websites without proper credit. I don’t mind people sharing the images they find here on the web if it’s non commercial use and I’m cited as the photographer. My signature on the images helps. I prefer the borrower link to my site as well and most people do.

Garen, I think the foxes and other mammals we see here always look healthier when they grow their winter coats. They all get a bit shabby looking in the summer.

WOW! What a wonderful experience – and you catching it with your camera was an added bonus for all of us to share! WOW!

These are great! I don’t mind your signature. You have done it in a very tasteful way that does not take away from the beauty of your images. Great job hun.

One time in the Rockies I witnessed a cat and a fox in the light of a streetlamp, pouncing at each other in a very similar way to these two foxes. It was the strangest, they definitely seemed playful and not aggressive. Maybe the fox just wants to be friends? :3

(Probably not good on you keeping an eye out! Beautiful photos!)
