I am not a birder so I can’t help with the ID. But I do love the top shot, particularly the way the pine needles fills in under the birds neck!

Thanks, Howard. I’m not much of a birder, either. This is probably a very common bird. What was uncommon for me was to be standing below the tree when the hawk landed. I was in shadow, so it didn’t see me until I moved. Unfortunately, I had to move to get a clear view and capture the images. A true birder might have kept still longer than me!
Looking at my bird ID books, I thought young some kind of hawk, too.
When I see a redtail in the sky flying overhead the tail looks very red with sunlight shining though it. This bird was illuminated with golden evening light just before sunset.

Hey Con, this looks like a red-tailed hawk to me. I always look for the belly band and dark leading edge of the wing.
Thanks, Mike.
Belly band? Would that be music for belly dancers?
I thought Redtail also, maybe a young one?
