The burned area is turning green with new growth, but the tall grass in the unburned area is still brown.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-139\" title=\"may0708elk-2\" src=\"http:\/\/condaily.com\/consworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/may0708elk-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/condaily.com\/consworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/may0708elk-2.jpg 450w, https:\/\/condaily.com\/consworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/may0708elk-2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/condaily.com\/consworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/may0708elk-2.jpg\"><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/condaily.com\/consworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/may0708elk-3.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some minutes later at upper lake, a heron, startled when I opened the ranch gate,\u00a0flew across and stood on the other side.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-144\" title=\"may0708heron-2\" src=\"http:\/\/condaily.com\/consworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/may0708heron-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/condaily.com\/consworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/may0708heron-2.jpg 300w, https:\/\/condaily.com\/consworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/may0708heron-2-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Captured with\u00a0100-400 mm zoom at 400, handheld at the gate, the photo\u00a0above is a\u00a0crop of the original. It did stay while I drove in, closed the gate, and parked.\u00a0 The\u00a0image above was taken across the small lake, also at 400mm and cropped to perhaps 1\/2 of the original image.<\/p>\n<p>My regret is that I didn&#8217;t change batteries after capturing\u00a0the\u00a0elk\u00a0images earlier. I suppose, at 36 degrees F, it was cold enough to\u00a0weaken the battery. I&#8217;d forgotten about the cold&#8217;s effect on battery life\u00a0because these spring days seem warm to me. An early morning\u00a0above freezing\u00a0is a wonderful thing this time of year.<\/p>\n<p>As I changed battery, the heron stretched its neck, then its wings, walked a few steps and took off.
